Application Fee

An application fee must accompany each application for admission. After records are processed and completed, the applicant is written regarding his acceptance. The nonrefundable application fee covers the cost of application processing.

Matriculation Fee

Required for all students each semester, the matriculation fee reserves class space for the applicant.  

Student Benefit Fee

This non-refundable, per-semester fee covers costs incurred from required concerts, extension ministries, athletic activities, ID cards, health fees, media resource fees, library use fees, Student Life services and the annual yearbook. All full-time students are charged the full student benefit fee whereas part-time students are only responsible for half of the student benefit fee. 

Tuition

A student may register for up to 18 semester hours without an overload charge to tuition. Any student who is permitted to enroll for more than 18 semester hours is charged for the additional hours at the current rate per credit hour. Part-time students (taking 11 or fewer hours per semester) are also charged per credit hour. Dorm students are required to take a minimum of 12 hours.

Room and Board

Room and board is charged per semester for dormitory students and covers costs associated with meals and housing.

Graduation Fee

The graduation fee covers the cost of Commencement including the diploma and graduation regalia. The fee must be paid in full whether the degree is received in person or in absentia.

Vehicle Registration Fee

For safety and security reasons, all licensed vehicles must be registered on campus and will be assessed a yearly fee. Each vehicle must have adequate insurance and will be issued a decal with a unique NMI number on it.

Change of Schedule Fee

No charge is incurred for schedule adjustments during drop/add week (first week of classes). After drop/add week, students are charged a modest fee per course for schedule adjustments. Tuition is charged from the first day of classes at the refund policy rate.

Returned Check Fee

The Business Office charges $25 for each check that is returned due to insufficient funds.

Late Registration Fee

A late registration fee is charged to students who fail to register for classes by 4 p.m. on registration day.

Northland's billing cycle for the Student Account is divided into ten payments each academic year, due on the fifth of each month, from August through May. The first payment of each semester–also known as the downpayment–is greater than the other four payments of the semester.

To enroll in a new school year, all outstanding amounts due to Northland, as well as the first payment of the new semester, must be paid before a student may begin classes. Even though a student may be working on campus to defray part of his expenses, the first payment must be paid in full.

It is important that all accounts be paid on time and be kept current. During the school year, an interest charge will be applied to outstanding balances.

The Business Office sends a statement of account to students ten to twelve days prior to the designated due date. Because a schedule of amounts due each payment is available through the Business Office, the statement is primarily an update of the standing of the student's account, reflecting payments and financial aid received, Work Study credits applied, and other charges (such as phone bills) applied or received during the month.

When the bank returns a check unpaid, a returned check fee is applied to the student's school bill. If as many as two checks are returned by the bank unpaid, Northland will no longer accept personal checks from that student or patron.

Students whose bills are paid in full by December 5 will automatically receive their final exam permits. At the discretion of the Business Office, some students with lower balances may receive their permits by completing a promissory note just prior to finals week. All remaining students must complete a Financial Review at the request of the Business Office and have an approved repayment plan in place before receiving their permits.

Textbooks, supplies, laundry, and incidentals may cost anywhere from $250 to $500 per semester, depending on individual student needs.

The Business Office cashes checks up to $100.

If a student decides to withdraw from college prior to the end of a semester, the following applies: If, during the first ten (10) weeks of the semester, the student withdraws voluntarily or by dismissal (except when called into military service), the tuition refund is prorated as follows, according to his withdrawal date. All other fees are nonrefundable.

5 weeks of classes – 50%
6 weeks of classes – 40%
7 weeks of classes – 30%
8 weeks of classes – 20%
9 weeks of classes – 10%

Note: Room and Board are prorated on a weekly basis from the first day of school.  

If a student cancels enrollment after nine (9) weeks have elapsed, he is responsible for the entire semester’s tuition and fee charges. Veterans under Public Law 89-358 receive a refund on a daily prorated basis. If the account adjustment results in an outstanding balance still owed to the college, the outstanding balance is due immediately. For all withdrawals, tuition account adjustments are based on the student’s last date of class attendance; room and board account adjustments are based on the student’s last day on campus. Upon receipt of written confirmation, students who submit payments before classes start but do not attend classes are eligible for a 100 percent refund, minus the required preregistration fee and allocated room and board costs.

When a student’s status is changed to “withdrawal” while he owes money to the college, the money is due upon withdrawal. If payment is not received within thirty days, a late payment penalty of 1.5 percent per month (18% APR) is charged to the unpaid balance until it is paid in full.

Any undergraduate student registered at Northland with three or more semester credit hours and all graduate students with no minimum credit limit are required to be covered under a credible health insurance program. This program can be through the student’s parents, through an outside policy in the student’s name, or through the policy offered at Northland International University. If a student is covered under an outside policy, the waiver form below should be completed and returned to Northland. Any student who does not have a completed waiver form on file will be charged for the Basic Plan student insurance offered by Northland.
