The goal of the church music program is to prepare dedicated musicians to develop and use their talents for the edification of Bible-preaching churches. Private lessons, ensemble participation, and courses in music theory, music history, and song leading will broaden students’ musical skills so that they can lead and teach others. Students will dig deep into the biblical text in an effort to form a theologically strong foundation for music philosophy, worship, program administration, and a “pastoral” view of music ministry. Music faculty members are practicing church musicians who serve as examples and sources of creative help. The foundation of the voice pedagogy degree is its scientific approach, enabling the student and teacher to understand the mechanics behind stewarding God-given talent. This approach is vital for the voice teacher who must adapt his methodology to each student's vocal behaviors and God-given characteristics. Both classroom and private one-on-one instruction are incorporated throughout the college career to prepare the student for the musical and spiritual ministry of teaching. Pedagogy students will broaden their performance and teaching abilities through applied lessons, recitals, and critical observations to enhance their knowledge for future work or graduate school. The piano pedagogy program is ideal for students who desire to impact others for the sake of the Gospel through one-on-one teaching in piano. The goal of this program is to ignite in each student a passion for life-touching-life ministry while developing skill and experience in private studio teaching. Through one-on-one instruction, practical pedagogy courses, and a capstone internship, students will have multiple opportunities to observe, assimilate, and apply their growing knowledge for the glory of God and the good of others. A minor in Music is ideal for the student whose primary educational focus is in another field, but who desires to hone his or her musical skills for broader ministry involvement. Both required and elective elements of this minor will strengthen the student’s understanding of music, develop the student’s musicality, provide education in individual areas of interest, and foster opportunities for musical involvement while the student completes his or her other degree requirements at Northland.
