Northland International University
sophomore guard Katelyn Matthai won the NCCAA national Student-Athlete of the
Week award for her play during the week of November 28–December 4. Matthai
averaged twenty-three points, eleven rebounds, three assists, and three steals
in three games while leading the Lady Pioneers to a 2–1 record last week. She
had game highs of twenty-three points, eleven rebounds, six assists, and six
steals in wins against Kuyper College (55–42) and Lincoln Christian University
(60–44) and a loss against NCAA III Finlandia University (45–51).
“Kate has been playing at a high
level already this season, and the games she had last week really indicate
that,” said head coach Paul Whitt. “She has been fun to watch, but none of it
would be possible without the hard work of her teammates as well. It’s also
very impressive when you consider she just completed her soccer season a few
weeks ago and really only had about three or four practices with the entire
team. As good of a basketball player as she is, by God’s grace, she’s a better
person.”
The nominees are reviewed by the
NCCAA Director of Member Relations, and one player in each recognized sport for
both Divisions I and II is selected. In addition to athletic accomplishments,
the recipient exemplifies the Christian ideals held by the NCCAA.
