‘Tis the Season . . . For Fine Arts Recitals

Published On: Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Four years of hard work for Communication Arts and Music majors climaxes in a senior recital. Depending on the area of study, the recital could be a piano, speech, or voice recital, or a staged production. These performances are open to the public.

The senior recital is taken very seriously by these majors as they pour in hours of effort and practice time throughout the semester. This semester presents the recitals of Katherine Whitwell, Jessica MacQuarrie, and Seth Peterson. The recitals make for a stressful, yet growing semester for the students.

Katherine Whitwell, a Music major with a piano pedagogy emphasis, has been busily preparing a piano recital as her last performance at Northland. She will hold her performance at 7:00 p.m. in the White Chapel this Thursday, December 1.

Jessica MacQuarrie, who will graduate with a Speech Education degree with a directing emphasis, directed the play “The Curious Savage” over the course of the semester. This weekend will evidence her hard work from the past few months. Jessica commented, “I must say that my favorite part of this production has been working with the cast members in rehearsals. Their creativity overflows and they make me laugh often and when I least expect it.” Northland Theater will present “The Curious Savage” Friday and Saturday, December 2 and 3, in the White Chapel at 7:00 p.m. each night. Tickets to see this performance are $2 for all ages.

Seth Peterson, the last to graduate with a Music Education degree, summarizes his plans for the future: “I am open to whatever the Lord has planned, but if He allows, I would like to work at a church where I can be a music pastor and teach music in their Christian school as well.” Seth’s voice recital is coming up on Monday, December 12, in the White Chapel at 7:00 p.m. and will include the debut of an original Christmas hymn in a beautiful a cappella styling composed and arranged by Seth himself.

These seniors eagerly finish up their education and demonstrate the skills and knowledge that they have gained. Their time at Northland has prepared them for the future and they look forward to how they can utilize their gifts to serve.
