Northland International University students appreciate refreshing time away from their studies, and intramurals provide that very thing. The intramural sports program at Northland has a variety of sports students can get involved in. During the fall, flag football is offered; in the spring, indoor soccer and basketball are offered for both guys and girls alike. New this year will be the four-day softball tournament in May. The Athletic Department is considering the addition of a few new intramural sports as time goes on—possibly sand-pit volleyball, softball, ping pong, and disc golf. What do students like most about the program? The following is what a few participants had to say about intramurals:
The intramural sports programs at Northland have given me the opportunity to use competition in a Christian atmosphere to grow both physically and spiritually. I’ve been challenged time and again by my teammates and even my opponents. It has been such a blessing to be able to compete with my brothers in Christ on the court and then sit next to them in class and watch them grow as well. Many of the friendships I’ve developed through intramurals extend far beyond the confines of the sport.
—Michael Cutler, sophomore, indoor soccer participant
I really enjoyed playing intramural soccer and basketball this semester. Not only did it help take my mind off homework for a while, but I was able develop better friendships with other players (not to mention chase the ball around a bit). The only thing I regretted was that the soccer season ended too quickly.
—Jason Lorch, freshman, indoor soccer and basketball participant
Intramural basketball was a great way to have some fun, competitive, and sometimes entertaining exercise.
—Ashlee Fox, freshman, basketball participant
The intramural program at Northland provides friendly competition and fellowship with peers. The games build opportunities not only for fellowship and recreation but also for the development of character qualities such as responsibility, temperance, and perseverance. Overall with their fun atmosphere, intramurals allow for both students and staff to get involved, resulting in discipleship opportunities as well.
