Even though Northland International University is remotely
located, students are provided the opportunity to attend cultural events.
Recently, professional singers, Darrin and Christine Hassevoort, as well as
their accompanist, Dr. Alan Nichols, performed for Northland students in the
most recent Chamber Series concert. All three are currently on the music
faculty of Chattanooga State Community College and have extensive experience in
their respective fields. (Click here
to read more about their experience.) Typically, the concert is the only exposure that students
have for visiting the performers; however, this year the Hassevoorts gave a
master class for voice students as well. In this workshop, the Hassevoorts had current
voice students perform a piece and then critiqued them to teach them ways to
improve their voices.
Ruth Rankin, a sophomore voice pedagogy major, remarked about
the workshop, “I came away with some good ideas. The Hassevoorts did a
marvelous job, and I think it was a very good learning experience for everyone
who was there.”
Nathan Jones, a junior music education major, commented, “The
master class was great for me. It was a great experience to be able to hear a
different perspective on some problems I was having with my voice tone. I was
able to get some pointers that my teacher can help me with in the future. I
can’t wait for next week’s lesson!”
