Preparing the Heart Project: Summer Update

Published On: Monday, July 26, 2010

The Northland campus has buzzed with excitement during summer 2010. Camp’s schedule has been in full swing since the beginning of June, and the Facilities Department has diligently worked to beautify and improve each camper’s experience at Northland Camp by finishing the exterior of the newly-renovated Daily Grind, by building a pergola outside for additional seating, and by pouring wider sidewalks from Northland Drive to the front of the Dining Hall. Each day, the pergola outside The Daily Grind stays busy with counselors having one-on-one conversations with their campers or with family campers enjoying a refreshing drink from the coffee shop with friends and family. The newly renovated White Dorms are also being used by campers this summer.

These improvements are all part of Phase 2 of the Preparing the Heart project, and the funds were donated by friends of Northland to finish the Phase 2 renovations. Praise the Lord with us that He has provided all of the necessary funds for Phases 1 and 2 of the Preparing the Heart project! The newly renovated buildings will not only look fantastic but by God’s grace will be used in His service for many more years to come.

Phase 3 of the project is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2011 and will involve a 4,200-foot expansion as well as a complete renovation of the Dining Hall. This is a highly anticipated improvement on our campus—sure to affect our student body about three times daily! The original buildings, designed with smaller crowds in mind, can no longer efficiently accommodate current college and camp traffic. Camp Director Steve Pettit puts it this way: “For the past few summers, our camps have been limited to a certain size, not because of an inadequate amount of housing, but because the Dining Hall could not accommodate the number of campers interested in attending!”

To remedy the current limitations, the Preparing the Heart project was unveiled in 2008. When the project is completed, all of the original buildings in the heart of campus will have new walls, carpeting, air conditioning, lighting, restrooms, and electrical work. Finally, exterior improvements such as stone, siding, and landscaping will highlight these improvements. “The buildings are still structurally sound but in need of significant renovation,” Dr. Pettit explains.

We look forward to seeing God’s continued work—not only in the completion of the remaining stages, but also in the transformation of hearts and lives through the ministry of Northland.
