Spring Break: A Time to Rest, Travel, and Serve

Published On: Wednesday, March 24, 2010

For many Northland students, Spring Break provides a time of much needed rest and relaxation at home; however, that is not the case for all students. This Spring Break three traveling teams are ministering and representing Northland International University.

The Northern Lights, Northland’s vocal ensemble, are currently traveling to churches in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. They are ministering in several churches and schools in these states.
This year’s team theme is “Look to Jesus,” and some of the songs they are singing are as follows: “God of Heaven,” “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing,” “Come Christians Join to Sing,” “I Will Rise,” “Glorious Indescribable,” “Come to Calvary’s Holy Mountain,” and “Forever and a Day.” The team desires to point others to Christ through encouragement and discipleship. Before leaving campus, team leader, Nathan Jones, commented on their theme: “This is really what Northland is about as a whole, which is what we’ll try to show to the churches we visit. We hope during this tour to not only represent a university, though we do, but to represent Jesus Christ and His glorious grace.”

The Proclaimers, Northland’s drama team, are also traveling and ministering to churches and schools in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana. The Proclaimers strive to edify the local church and other Christian ministries through the presentation of drama. This year the drama team is presenting “Faith Without Trappings”—a forty-minute drama telling the life story of Darlene Diebler Rose, missionary to New Guinea, and depicting God’s testing of her faith during her time in a Japanese prison camp. Additionally, the team is presenting three shorter, eight-minute dramas: “A Great Gulf Fixed” with a salvation and witnessing theme; “The Room,” which is the story of the Christian life and how it has been covered by the blood of Jesus; and “Alive Together With Christ,” where Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene compare their relationships to Jesus and their shared need of His salvation.

Representing Northland overseas is the study tour group led by Dr. Jim Bennett. This year’s group is focusing on Classical Europe and touring the countries of Italy and Greece. The students are visiting many significant cities of the New Testament and the birthplace of the ideas that shaped the modern world. Students are exploring many sought-after places from the Acropolis and the ancient city of Corinth in Greece to the vast ruins of the Colosseum and the catacombs in Rome. A highlight of this year’s trip for the students is the opportunity to go inside the Vatican. This trip
counts as a three-credit history elective for some, and the desire for students who take this trip is that they will return with a deep understanding of both the New Testament and the pillars of the Western world.

This year’s Spring Break is an exciting time for students both at home and abroad. Please keep these groups in prayer for continued traveling safety and effective opportunities for ministry.
