It is
the goal of Northland’s Safety/Security Department to provide a safe
environment for all of the faculty, staff, students, and visitors
utilizing our facilities and programs. Recognizing the safety of the
student body as a stewardship from the Lord, Northland’s Security
Department strives to continually develop and promote a comprehensive
safety program as well as implement and enforce established guidelines
with the purpose of ensuring a secure campus environment.
In
a broad sense, the Security Department handles such tasks as
registering vehicles, delineating and enforcing parking and moving
vehicle guidelines, conducting patrols of campus, monitoring campus
activity, conducting fire drills and fire alarm system checks,
conducting campus lighting reports, overseeing the campus lost and found program, reporting violations of nationally recognized safety
codes (i.e., NFPA and OSHA standards), and handling other security
related matters around campus. The Security Department also trains its
workers to be prepared for various types of emergencies. Northland
Security holds a good relationship with local law enforcement and
medical agencies and coordinates with these groups when necessary.
In
specific regard to the individual students on campus, Security provides
many avenues of assistance. Students are encouraged to stop by the
Security offices with any questions or concerns they may have. Security
can also be reached at any time of day or night by contacting the
Security Booth. The booth, being the first point of communication upon
arrival on campus, represents a strategic location. Booth workers
assist guests as well as conduct the responsibilities of the central
point of communication for Security. After office hours, students can
call the Security Booth with any emergency situation. Medical calls are
routed to the Security Booth after office hours, and the workers there
are trained to facilitate quick and efficient communication with the
on-call nurse. Problems with vehicle and maintenance issues can also be
directed to the Security Booth after hours where the workers will
contact the appropriate department staff.
In
striving to maintain the necessary level of safety and security on
campus, the Security Department continually seeks to become more
efficient and effective in service. Researching and staying current
with situations and policies at other institutions constitutes only one
way of developing good safety standards. Questions regarding campus
security can be directed to Don Seely, director of Safety/Security.
