The rules at Northland are based on biblical principles and practicalities. Some of our rules are because we believe the Bible gives a specific principle relating to that area, and our desire is to help our students live in a way that pleases the Lord as well as develop godly patterns that will last a lifetime.
Other rules are based on the fact that we have 800–900 people living in very close proximity, which means we have to keep a more controlled atmosphere so everyone can live in peace and accomplish the purpose of getting an education and growing spiritually.
Almost all of our students would tell you that the rules are not a daily focus or a problem. Sure, sometimes rules seem to get in the way of what we want to do, but if God has called you to Northland, this will be the exception.
If you have specific questions about these or other areas, don't feel embarrassed to contact us at admissions@ni.edu and ask. We won't think negatively of you. We get a lot of specific questions. You can also contact one of our students, or better yet, come visit and see for yourself.
Many wonder about our dress code for guys and girls. Northland asks that guests observe the same standards of dress that apply to students. Ladies: Modest dresses, skirts, and dress pants are suitable for chapel and classes.Young Men: Neat, trimmed hair and collared shirts are suitable for chapel and classes.
You will find Northland to be a very musical campus! God not only created music, but He also created us, His image bearers, to be musical. Therefore, we believe that music should honor the character of God, and be used in ways that help you and those around you grow in your walk with Christ. We encourage our students to listen to and promote such music, to understand what the Bible says about it, and to learn to make appropriate musical choices based on biblical principles for God’s glory and others’ good.
Northland’s music policy is simply this: we trust that many of the students God has sent us desire to honor Him with their lives. We also know that God’s Spirit is constantly at work, sanctifying each of His children. When it comes to music, two people equally dedicated to the Lord may not have the same musical preferences. All we ask is that your music not be in direct conflict with God’s character, that you submit to God’s Spirit and to your God-ordained authorities (parents, pastor, etc.), and that the law of love will trump the law of liberty in your public listening and playing.
If you have particular questions about music or our music philosophy, policies, or procedures, you can talk with us upon arrival or give us a call. We would love to explain the biblical principles involved so you can think through your music tastes and standards. Even though in the long run your boundaries may not align exactly with ours as an institution, we believe that your time at Northland will greatly aid you in developing a biblical philosophy of music that transcends time and culture.
The 2011–2012 academic year's tuition, room and board, and fees total $16,640. While most Northland students receive some form of assistance, not all is from the Pell program. Many of our students receive assistance from scholarships, their home church, family, friends, or anonymous donors. Although the cost of your college education may cause you stress, we want to work with you to find ways to meet your needs. Here are a few ways Northland can help.

You will find an outstanding faculty at Northland. We are thankful that God has provided men and women of great knowledge and wisdom as well as practical experience in the disciplines and courses that they teach. The high majority have advanced degrees, and all have the experience and education to be highly capable of teaching material in a way that you will appreciate and learn from. Our mission is to train you as a servant-leader so you can go and fulfill the Great Commission in the ministry to which God leads you.
Northland's faculty and staff are also committed to establishing and maintaining a personal relationship with each student. Personal counseling, guidance, and one-on-one discipleship are available anytime a student requests such assistance. In the faculty and staff's effort to be available for students and to develop a relationship with them, Northland has established Kampus Kids, which assigns students to different campus "families." Each family has about six Kampus Kids. The families get together periodically for the purposes of encouragement and fun.
Northland students are allowed to bring cars on campus. There is a small $40 registration fee per year. Of course you also have to have insurance, but we recommend that anyhow!
Students are usually willing to take other students with them when they go to town. Students may use the Northland shuttle to and from the Green Bay airport for a $50 fee with prior arrangement.
Located in the beautiful northwoods of Wisconsin, Northland is surrounded by 1,500 acres of forest in a region still dominated by the timber industry. Camp Lake is located on campus, and four other lakes are within easy hiking distance. Located behind the Fine Arts Center, Reflection Lake is a favorite site for fishing, canoeing, and enjoying God's creation. Trails surrounding the lake provide a relaxing, picturesque location for hiking. Off-campus attractions include many waterfalls and golf courses. The region is especially popular in the fall months for hunting and during the winter months for snowmobiling and skiing. Iron Mountain, Michigan (located about a half hour north), offers the nearest Wal-Mart and other shopping, bowling alleys, fast food, family-style restaurants, and other attractions. TimberStone Golf Course, which received five stars from Golf Digest Magazine, is located in Iron Mountain. World cup ski jumping is an annual event at the Pine Mountain Resort in Iron Mountain. Green Bay, home of the Green Bay Packers and an ideal location for shopping and other attractions, is located about ninety minutes south.
Yes, it is located in all of the buildings and dorms.

Over the years, Northland International University has had a "no-debt policy." The goal behind this policy was to help our students graduate debt-free, allowing them to immediately enter the ministry. However, as time has passed, families have continually asked Northland to allow them the freedom to use all of the resources available to help them pay for college. We still believe that God can and does miraculously provide money for school bills, but it is not our intention to put God in a box and to try to dictate to families how God should work in their individual circumstances.
Since it is ultimately the responsibility of the student and his or her family to decide these matters in the light of God's Word and the Holy Spirit's leading, we will defer to them. At the same time, we will also consistently sound a warning against excessive debt for those going into the ministry. With this in mind, Northland is now participating in the Federal Family Education Loan program, which includes Stafford subsidized and unsubsidized loans as well as the Parent Plus Loan program. This is the only Federal loan program we will participate in. In accordance with our beliefs, this program seeks to place reasonable caps on the amount a student can borrow and allows parents to carry a large portion of the responsibility by making low-interest loans available to them for up to the cost of education. You can read more about this program and its advantages by visiting www.studentaid.ed.gov and reading the sections on Funding, Stafford Loans, and Parent Plus Loans.
Finally, regardless of what students, parents, and pastors decide concerning the financing of educational expenses, our heartfelt desire is that they would carefully consider any incurring of debt in light of a biblical philosophy of stewardship. In whatever financial counseling we do with our students, we will continue to put a strong emphasis upon God-dependence and will caution them not to mount up a heavy-debt load. We still reserve the right not to certify a loan or to certify it for less than the amount requested if we feel that the loan would not be in the best interest of the student's future ministry. If you have questions or comments, please direct them to our Financial Aid Office by sending e-mail to financialaid@ni.edu or by calling us at 1.888.4.NORTHLAND ext. 3150.
