Freshman Mark Romig, one of five starting freshmen for the Pioneer squad, started the game firing for Northland, scoring two goals in the opening fifteen minutes—one goal coming off a rebound and the other a converted penalty. Superior would pull within one before the half as Alberto Rivero got free down the left flank and slipped the ball passed Pioneer GK Dave Bartholomew.
The second frame saw Superior benefit from a bit of fortune as they scored in the forty-eight and forty-ninth minutes. The first goal was another flanking run down the flank and a slotted ball into the corner. Their second of the half was recorded as an own goal when a Superior striker’s wild shot took an unfortunate deflection into the Northland net. The Pioneers would battle back and tie the game when freshman Josh Netz followed up on a shot and pounded home the rebound to tie the game in the fifty-fifth minute. Josh Conover would help Northland regain the lead when he dipped a bending ball to far post over the UW keeper in the fifty-eighth minute. The Pioneers would hold the lead until Superior again drew even in the eighty-third minute, forcing overtime.
The Pioneers squandered an overtime breakaway opportunity and paid dearly for it as Superior would capitalize on a corner kick just two minutes later in the ninety-eight minute. The Jackets improve to 8–6–2 while the Pioneers fall to 12–4 on the year. The Pioneers outshot the Jackets 17–12; Dave Bartholomew collected seven saves in net. Northland next moves on to play Rockford College in their regular season finale on Monday at 1 p.m. (CST).
