The weekend
started with a battle between the Pioneers and the Lady Freemen from
Providence. It was slow moving for the ladies from Northland as Providence mounted the first successful attack. Melanie Warkentine in the seventeenth minute of play was the first to penetrate Northland defenders and skillfully
place the ball in the net. The attack
woke the Pioneers, causing them to answer back in the twenty-sixth minute
when freshman Kate Matthai evened the score to one. Shortly after it seemed as though the
Pioneers were on a mission to become a dominating force as sophomore Sara
Seering found the net in the thirty-second minute. This attack would give the Pioneers the lead of
2–1 but only for a moment. Three
minutes later Warkentine was allowed another opportunity to help her team and
answered the call successfully. Continuing up to the half, Northland contained the Freemen attack and
developed several attacks of their own but produced nothing to increase the
score. Unfortunately, the second half
scoreboard was controlled ultimately by the Freemen. Though Northland penetrated the Providence
defense many times, they struggled to complete the task. Ruth Shantz for Providence would be the
only player to make a difference on the scoreboard in the second half, leaving
the final score at 2–5.
The Lady
Pioneers will take on the Rams from North Central at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 2,
2010.
