12/13/11 - Life on Earth is a Bit Like Boot Camp
A student of mine recently gave a speech on the rigorous training that men undergo to become Navy SEALs. A 26-week boot camp puts these men to the ultimate test both physically and mentally, and approximately 70% of the men who begin the training never complete it.

11/21/11 - Small Group Communications
We live in an age of team projects and group
communication. Marketing teams, team missions, assessment groups, church
leadership committees, group projects, and social networks are a natural part
of the modern workplace, ministry, and academic environment. So a class like
Small Group Communication, taught by Communications professor Mrs. Rachel
Trach, is necessary for preparing students for their future vocations. This
college-age generation is perhaps more social and more team-oriented than any
other, and this class helps the students create and manage productive and
cohesive groups.

11/14/11 - Two Gentlemen of Verona
Elizabethan England came to campus over the weekend by way of Northland Theater’s production
of Shakespeare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona. As in all of Shakespeare’s comedies, there were themes of unrequited love, enduring love, forgiveness, positive lunacy, and just plain fun. And then, of course, there’s a big scene in the end in which everyone gets what he or she deserves.

that somehow, there is often a disconnect between the prayer for God-glorifying
speech and the practice of it.

Arts Students Start First Week of Classes
Time never plods in the academic world—unless you’re the
student anticipating lunch next hour. When the school year starts, it doesn’t
wait around for the daisies to bloom, and here in Communication Arts, we’re
even sprinkling on a little fertilizer.
On the second night of classes, auditions were held for
the annual fall play. Nearly 40 students showed up to read for Two Gentlemen of
Verona, directed by Mr. Brock Miller. Less than a week after those auditions,
there will be a second set held for senior Jessica MacQuarrie’s recital
project, The Curious Savage.

Arts Department Welcomes Students Back
The fall semester of 2011
is only days away—three, at the moment of this writing—and the Communication
Arts Department is excited to welcome the students back. In the last few days,
campus has exploded with energy as students began to arrive and unpack, and
something similar has happened in our department. We have a number of students
returning this year, but we have nearly doubled in size because of the new
students who will be joining us!
