Department of Music

God not only created music; He created man to be musical. At Northland, students will find a very musical campus with multiple opportunities to get involved! For those desiring to hone their musical gifts further, Northland’s Music Department offers specialized training that is tailored as much as possible to each student’s passion for ministry. Beyond completing the comprehensive core of music theory and aural training, music history, music technology, applied lessons in their instrument, and a capstone biblical philosophy of music course, students may choose one of three emphases: church music, piano pedagogy, or voice pedagogy. The goal of each program is to prepare skillful servant-musicians who are gospel-centered, committed to the local church, and equipped to serve the Body of Christ through preparing, leading, teaching, and ministering in music. With greater flexibility in the program’s requirements, students who have a specific burden for cross-cultural ministry now have the opportunity to study abroad for a semester.

Requirements Overview

All music majors will receive a strong core of music theory and aural training, music history, music technology, a biblical music philosophy, and applied music courses. They will prepare one to two recitals and gain practical experience through an internship specific to their emphasis. Non-piano proficiencies will need to demonstrate competency in basic piano skills. Each music student will find multiple opportunities to serve in musical venues at Northland including Concert Choir, Concert Orchestra, Northern Lights, music for daily chapel, and special services and conferences. The combination of musical training and practical experience will equip each student to minister biblically and effectively as music teachers and leaders both locally and worldwide for the sake of the Gospel and for the edification of Christ’s church.
